Unlacquered Brass

Unlacquered Brass is deliberately left uncoated. Instead of preserving one fixed appearance, the surface responds to touch, air and its surroundings. Over time it becomes deeper and more characterful.

How the patina develops

Unlacquered Brass changes gradually rather than all at once. The exact appearance will depend on how the hardware is handled and the environment around it.

01 DAY ONE

Bright & warm

The brass begins with a fresh golden appearance and a clean, natural surface.

02 MONTHS 1–6

First changes

The brightness gradually softens. Areas that are touched frequently may begin to darken first.

03 YEARS 1–5

Developing character

The colour becomes deeper and warmer, with increasingly natural variation across the surface.

04 YEARS 5+

Established patina

The brass settles into a richer, lived-in appearance shaped by years of use and the environment around it.

Prefer the original brightness? Unlacquered Brass can be polished to restore a brighter appearance. The natural patina will gradually begin developing again.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR HARDWARE

Simple care for lasting finishes

CopperZinc hardware is designed for everyday use. A few simple habits are enough to keep your finishes looking their best.

Clean gently

Use a soft, clean cloth for regular cleaning. If more cleaning is needed, use mild soap diluted with water and dry the hardware immediately afterwards.

Avoid abrasives

Avoid scouring pads, steel wool, abrasive cloths and aggressive metal cleaners. These can mark or alter the surface of the finish.

Keep it dry

After cleaning or exposure to water, wipe the hardware dry. This is particularly useful in kitchens and bathrooms.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Finish questions, answered

Will brass hardware turn green? +

Indoor brass is not expected to develop the green-blue corrosion commonly associated with untreated brass exposed to outdoor conditions. Unlacquered Brass will instead develop a warmer, darker patina as it ages.

Can I restore Unlacquered Brass? +

Yes. If you prefer the brighter appearance of new brass, an appropriate brass polish can be used to remove the developed patina. The surface will naturally begin changing again afterwards.

Are the finishes suitable for kitchens and bathrooms? +

Our sealed finishes are designed for normal interior use, including kitchens and bathrooms. We recommend wiping away standing water and avoiding harsh cleaning chemicals. Unlacquered Brass will generally develop its patina faster in humid environments.

Will my hardware look exactly like the image? +

Product photography provides the best representation we can offer, but subtle differences can occur between individual pieces. This is particularly noticeable in finishes with aged, distressed or naturally varying characteristics.

What is the difference between electroplated and PVD finishes? +

Both are designed to provide a durable, consistent surface. Electroplating applies the finish through an electrochemical process, while PVD uses a vapour-deposition process to create a highly durable coating. Our Polished Brass and Polished Chrome finishes use PVD.

What should I do if I notice a finish problem? +

Please contact CopperZinc customer support with your order details and photographs of the issue. We can then assess the finish and help determine the appropriate solution.
